Amber’s Room A+ Plan to Achieve Student Excellence

Rotary’s mission is to break barriers through literacy, ensuring opportunities for all learners and setting a path towards a better future. Reading is critical to every child’s future.

By Grade 3, two-thirds of children nationwide cannot read at grade level.
Most of these at-risk children are kids of color and from low income households.
Children who can’t read are 4X more likely to drop out of high school.
85% of juvenile offenders have difficulty reading.
70% of incarcerated adults cannot read at a fourth grade level.
Bringing ALL adults to the equivalent of a sixth grade reading level would generate an additional $2.2 trillion – 10% of GDP – in annual income for the country.

The “Be Reading” Free Reading Program is integral to driving success at Amber’s Room

The FREE Be Reading Program provides comprehensive K-6 on-line literacy activities. Created nearly ten years ago as a response to the Syrian Refugee crisis in Canada, this program, developed by the Rotary Club of Scarborough, Ontario, has provided over 360,000 families with over 3.5 million hours of learning in 180 countries and four languages. With support from organizations and individuals around the world, the Free Reading Program is favored by learners seeking accessible English literacy in a fun and motivating format.

In 90 days of Amber’s Room and Be Reading, MDCPS test scores confirmed that participants progressed from a level 1 (need help reading instructions ) to a level 3 (third grade) reading level.
